ESAD and Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos invited the architects Rintala e Eggertsson, Mestriner and Spadoni to boost the Viewport Workshop, a project to create a Wine Bar / Lounge Area in espaço Quadra outside the Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos.

Sami Rintala, representing the studio Rintala Eggertsson Architects, based in Oslo, Norway, is the major driving force of this project. This Finnish architect and artist bases all of his work on the narrative and conceptualism of spaces, playing with the physical, mental, social and poetic resources of the places involved. Rintala drew public attention when he joined Marco Casagrande, whose partnership reached its peak when they participated in the Venice Biennale in 2000, with the controversial project Sixty Minute Man, a boat thrown into the water with a garden inside, fed by the excrements of the city that otherwise would go directly into the Venice canals, a way of commenting on the theme "more ethical and less aesthetic". Currently, Rintala is associated with professors from the Polytechnic Institute of Milan, Paolo Massimiliano and Spadoni Mestriner, who complement the team of this Viewport Workshop.

The work room went to the streets of Matosinhos, more specifically in front of the Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos. This is where the project is being created, based on the principles of self-construction, reuse and recycling of materials, and on the connection between the social and environmental context and global sustainability.

In this project are involved about 40 students of the degree in Interior Design of ESAD and of the Architecture degrees from the Faculty of Architecture of Oporto, Department of Architecture at the University of Coimbra, Faculty of Architecture in Melbourne (Australia) and the Polytechnic Institute of Milan (Italy), in close connection with the local population, which accompanies and participates in the development of the project.

On 8 June at the closing of the Viewport Workshop, will be presented the Wine Bar / Lounge Space, designed and built throughout the week, with a happy hour and music, with the construction scenery, the Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos.

This workshop is organized in partnership with the Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos, and sponsored by RAR Imobiliária and Niepoort and with the support of Exporlux, Vicaima, Lipor and Solvenag Energias Renováveis.
