José Manuel Figueiredo and Paulo Seco were in charge of the rehabilitation of the Carcavelos Housing Estate in Matosinhos, designed by Joaquim Bento Lousan and built in 1979 under the SAAL programme. This work led to a book that, above all, is a tribute to the architect who is from Alfeizerão.

Designed by Susana Fernando, the book, entitled A Periferia da Periferia - Conjunto Habitacional de Carcavelos, includes texts by Jorge Figueira, José António Bandeirinha, Graça Correia and Sergio Fernandez, as well as photographs by Rui Pedro Bordalo and João Rey Soares.

The launch of the book, which includes a lecture by architect Manuel Ascensão, after a presentation by Paulo Seco and before a conversation with the authors of the texts, will take place on 29 February at Exploratório, at 243 Rua Brito Capelo, in Matosinhos at 6.30 pm.

Bairro de Carcavelos is one of Joaquim Bento Lousan's (1932-) main projects and, at the same time, one of the most important large-scale urban interventions carried out as part of the Serviço de Apoio Ambulatório Local (SAAL), the programme that, after the April Revolution, set out to meet the housing needs of the most disadvantaged classes.
