On 7 June, from 6pm, the esad-idea Exploratório will host the presentation of book number 6 of the Alter — Journal collection, published as part of the Porto Design Bienalle.
The book, entitled “Alter — Resistances: Liberation as a Project", was produced by the brazilian network “Design & Opression”, a collective made up, among others, of Bibiana Serpa, Eduardo Souza and Sâmia Batista. These three designers will take part in the presentation via videoconference.
The conversation will be moderated by Raquel Pais, who, together with Alastair Fuad-Luke, edited this book from the Alter —Journal collection. Brazilian designer Nina Paim will also be a guest at the event.
‘Alter — Resistances: Liberation as a Project’ was born out of the need for dialogue that emerged between designers from all over Brazil in the Covid and post-Covid era. Motivated by reading the books of educator Paulo Freire, they began to meet remotely in search of answers that the responsibilities of the professional activity of design could bring in the face of the reality in which Brazil was living. Working on the theme of resistance, the collective envisaged ways of collaborating between design and social movements in a country that is still suffering the effects of extreme right- wing governance.
Defending the emancipation of all marginalised groups, the articles in this 6th issue of Alter — Journal reject a totalising design and propose popular organisational practices.
Published during the second edition of the Porto Design Biennale, the Alter — Journal series is dedicated to the theme ‘Alter-Realities’ and presents new perspectives on issues of production, care, experiences and landscapes.
The series was conceptualised according to the curatorial programme developed by Alastair Fuad-Luke during the 2021 edition of the Porto Design Biennale, with guest editors for each issue.
First presented at the Porto Book Fair in 2021, the project is still active, with two new issues coming out in 2024: #6 Alter — Resistances: Liberation as a Project and #7 Alter — Citizenship: Reconfiguring the Act of Inhabiting the City.
