The intersection of art, design, science and heritage on display

 

The BioFiligrana® exhibition, curated by Olga Noronha, opens on 3 September at 7.30 pm, at the Ateneo de Málaga (Espacio Frank Rebajes). The exhibition will run until 15 October 2026.

Developed as part of the research project ‘Study of filigree patterns for applications in biomedical jewellery’, the BioFiligrana® exhibition brings together a collection of pieces that explore the intersection between art, design, science and heritage. The project takes a pioneering approach by investigating how traditional filigree patterns and techniques can be applied to the design and development of bone fixation plates and other medical devices, reinterpreting them as objects of aesthetic, symbolic and poetic value.

The exhibition takes visitors on a journey that reveals not only the technical and scientific processes involved, but also the conceptual dimension that arises from this fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary research. The pieces invite the public to reflect on new possibilities for dialogue between the human body, biomedical materiality and the ornamental language of filigree, one of the most emblematic expressions of Portuguese heritage.

BioFiligrana® shares the findings of ongoing research being carried out at esad—idea, highlighting the role of artistic practice and design as drivers of transdisciplinary innovation. Coordinated by Olga Noronha, an artist and designer recognised for her work in the field of medical jewellery, the project offers a unique perspective that is deeply rooted in issues relating to the body, healing and technical expertise.”
