CINANIMA in the Universities returns in October and brings to 18 Portuguese higher education institutions a showcase of the best of auteur animation cinema, with 26 animated short films.

This programme brings together a selection of winning short films from the 47th edition of the Festival. It includes landmark films such as Our Uniform, by Yegane Moghaddam, winner of the Grand Prix and shortlisted for an Oscar nomination, Almost I Remember, directed by Dimitri Mihajlovic and Miguel Lima and which won the António Gaio Prize, and Family Portrait by Lea Vidakovic, winner of the Special Jury Prize.

The tradition of animation in Zlín dates back to the Second World War era. Businessman and visionary Tomáš Baťa built his own film studios to initially produce commercials for his Baťa shoe company. In the following decades, the foundations were laid for the Animation Department at Tomas Bata University. Today, the Animation Department, or Animat, develops and perfects students' expertise in basic animation filmmaking techniques, such as traditional and digital 2D animation, stop motion and 3D animation. Most of the graduates' films make it to numerous festivals, travelling the world and appearing at the Annecy, Cannes, Berlinale, Hiroshima festivals or with worldwide distributors (HBO, Miyu Distribution).

The Faculty of Fine Arts at the Polytechnic University of Valencia is currently the top-ranked university in Spain for artistic studies. Animation is taught in the Fine Arts and Design and Creative Technologies degrees, including subjects on animation principles, 2D and 3D animation, stop motion, animation projects and production, as well as animation history and theory. The Master's in Animation includes a programme where students develop 2D or 3D short films in groups with professionals in the field. The faculty publishes the research journal ‘Con A de Animación’, which publicises studies and advances in this field. The ‘Prime the Animation’ festival has been held since 2012, a benchmark for new creators with the opportunity to connect with the industry and a wider audience.
