Lecture and workshop with the typographer Andreu Balius, a warm up of the 10th Encounter of Typography, which will take place at ESAD from November 22 to 23, 2019.

Andreu Balius is the type designer and founder of Type Republic, having been awarded several awards of excellence for his work. Member of AGI - Alliance Graphique Internationale, TDC - Type Directors Club and ATypI - Association Typographique Internationale, teaches typography and type design at EINA - School of Design and Art * in Barcelona.

Experimenting Modularity in Type Design

A workshop were principles such as experimentation and modularity in type design will be delivered. We understand modularity as a way to reduce complex systems into a more flexible and dynamic ones. Systems where components can be combined in different ways. The workshop will aim students to create their own modular system in order to design a typeface, focusing on basic type design concepts and will go further into the complexity of creating an alphabet that will be used to celebrate the Bauhaus 100 years with a poster.

Research is an important part in any design process. But it makes no sense to me if not applied in practice. During my professional career as type designer, I have developed several methodologies of work based on different approaches to type design. During the lecture, I will explain some process of work following to personal approaches to type design: from practice-based research projects to brand design commissioned work, following multiscript type design as a more social awareness in our global society. — Andreu Balius
