Science, Art and Design in Dialogue at Creative Continuum Conference 2026

Jeremy Aston, Lecturer at ESAD College of Art and Design, Course Coordinator for the Graduate Degree in Design — Product Design and Design Researcher at esad—idea, took part in the Creative Continuum Conference 2026 in London on 9 October. Bringing together professionals and educators from Science, Art and Design, the conference explored interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, learning and creative practice, including the role of biomimicry in design innovation.

Held at the W12 Conference Centre, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, the event brought together more than 100 students, teachers, academics, researchers, curators and professionals. The morning programme featured an anatomical demonstration led by Dr Fay Penrose, Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Anatomy, in which participants explored the structures of pig, sheep and cow hearts, considering how biological forms and functions can inspire creative practice.

In the afternoon, Jeremy Aston explored the role of the industrial designer and biomimicry as a source of design innovation. He also co-led a sketching workshop in which participants translated their anatomical observations into explorations of form, structure and texture. The conference concluded with a discussion on the relationship between STEM and STEAM education, highlighting how the integration of Art and Design can enrich scientific understanding, encourage creative problem-solving and foster more holistic approaches to teaching and learning.
