Frontiere, with giulio vinaccia and k_alma

As part of the exhibition Frontiere - Expressions of Contemporary Design, that integrates Porto Design Biennale Territorio Italia program, ESAD hosts a workshop with Giulio Vinaccia and K_Alma Carpinteria Social.

Giulio Vinaccia is a product designer, working for 20 years for Italian brands such as Brembo, Ferrari Spa, Piaggio Spa, Momo Design, Ducati, Aprilia, Gilera , Moschino and Borsalino. Since 1994, he has been a consultant in projects where design is used as a development tool, collaborating with different international organizations and institutions. Today, after working in over 22 countries, he is one of the most respected experts in social design-oriented projects. In 2015 he was awarded the World Green Design Contribution Award and in 2016 he received the Compasso d´Oro.

K_Alma Carpinteria Social is an association dedicated to formal and informal education, which was born in 2016 with the intention of seeking, from a multicultural perspective, the promotion of freedom and the defense of human dignity. It promotes projects aimed at disseminating new collaborative practices in the areas of eco-sustainability, inclusion of disadvantaged people and social innovation.

The workshop is based on the idea that attention and respect for local cultures derive only from knowledge of the mechanisms, motivations and characteristics of diversity. Each society projects its own view of the world in the space in which it lives and in the objects it uses, while inscribing the images it holds. In the current process of globalization of the world economy, where the importance of local creativity is rediscovered day after day, this project proposes the analysis and redesign of a series of African material culture. The specific theme of this project is the development of a collection of hybrids products through the analysis of 3 traditional African objects and the use of recycled materials, with the purpose of giving rise to the development of a collection that will be marketed later by the association K_ALMA, highlighting the fundamental role of associations and NGOs as dissonant elements within the negative view of the other. From a designer's point of view, the systems and forms of African ethnographic tradition already known but considered marginal is a fundamental exercise for the development of a true local project system where it is necessary to work with the local culture's own forms, plots or techniques.

The workshop proposes the analysis of three icons of African vernacular design: the 2-piece bench, the folding table and the bush toys.

The Frontiere exhibition features stories from designers, companies, schools and associations who, responding to the stimuli of post-millennium reality, discover new dimensions in the design approach. New ways of thinking, designing and producing that explore the creative universe historically present in the territory and combine it with the new realities of communication, distribution, use and reuse of the current social system.

The exhibition, curated by Maria Milano and Lucio Magri, is open at Casa do Design Matosinhos until December 8, 2019.
