Gabriel Tan, originally from Singapore, is the founder of Gabriel Tan Studio and Studio Antimatter. In 2020, he moved to Porto to set up a second design office for Gabriel Tan Studio / Studio Antimatter and established Origin Made, a brand of design collectibles that aims to rejuvenate Portuguese craftsmanship through collaborations between local and international artisans and designers.

The Gabriel Tan Studio has designed furniture and products for Station Blå, Menu, Design Within Reach, The Conran Shop, Lemnos Japan, Authentics and Abstracta. Gabriel also runs the Singapore door handle brand Turn and the Japanese furniture brand Ariake. In addition to his career as a designer, he has been a guest lecturer at Lasalle College of the Arts, National University of Singapore, University of Oregon and Pratt Institute. He has also been a jury member at the Cannes Lions Festival and the Core77 Design Awards.

At Gabriel Tan Studio and Studio Antimatter, we combine our background in furniture design, our love of culture and craft, with our beliefs in holistic interior design. Each of these three pillars plays an important role in our creative process and collaborative work. In particular, we are deeply passionate about rejuvenating local craft cultures. Together with our clients and collaborators, we have created design brands such as Ariake (Japan) and Origin Made (Portugal). Although we are new to these countries, we have fully immersed ourselves in the environment, spent time with local artisans and factories, and created designs based on sustainability.

Gabriel Tan presents the conference Sustaining Crafts through Design on 3 May at 10:45am in the auditorium as part of ESAD ID Talks 2023.

Following the lecture, students also had the opportunity to visit the Gabriel Tan Studio. In this visit, Gabriel Tan shared his creative process, the products he has developed and his vision of the business.
