Impressions from Warsaw Prisons: Lamentum II, by Ewa Bobrowska, is based on images from Warsaw prisons. The work translates into an existential lamentation over death and constructs an artistic narrative about human existence.
Ewa Bobrowska was inspired by the work of Jacques Derrida in a reflection on death from a philosophical perspective. The video shows the prison space in Warszawa - Służewiec and the execution chambers, and also includes images of Long Beach, on the California coast, where Derrida gave his lectures. The rotating image engages the viewer, intensifying the experience of subordination and disorientation. Among others, it also references Michel Foucault's Panopticism, Shakespeare's Hamlet and the metaphysical poetry of John Done.
Ewa Bobrowska (PL), philosopher of art and visual artist, holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Warsaw and in Video and Media Art from the University of Fine Arts in Poznań. She promotes theoretical seminars and is the author of 2 monographs: UCI Critical Theory and Contemporary Art Practice: Jacques Derrida, Jean-François Lyotard, Bruce Nauman and Others and Para-Theory: lrvine School of Criticism.
