The experimental short film PHASMA has been selected for the programme of the Chania Film Festival in Greece, further strengthening ESAD’s presence at major international film festivals.

Directed by Pedro Evaristo, Liza Stoitsi and Timo Martinez, final-year students on ESAD’s Bachelor’s degree in Digital Arts and Multimedia in 2025, the film was developed under the supervision of lecturers Marta Varzim and Tomé Quadros.

With a poetic and speculative approach, PHASMA invites reflection on memory, architecture and the human condition. The narrative is set in a post-human scenario in which three spaces, once central to collective life — a cinema, a church and a stadium — are gripped by an existential unease, questioning their very reason for being and wondering whether there is still anyone left to inhabit them.

Synopsis of the short film

When humanity disappears, three empty spaces — a cinema, a church and a stadium — begin to question their own existence, their purpose and whether anyone is still out there.

In addition to being selected for the Chania Film Festival, PHASMA was also chosen by ESAD to represent the school in its submission to the Sophia Student Awards, organised by the Portuguese Film Academy, further reinforcing recognition of the project’s artistic and cinematographic quality.

Selection for the Chania Film Festival constitutes an important international recognition of the work carried out by students on ESAD’s Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Arts and Multimedia, highlighting the quality of the education provided and the significance of the artistic output produced at the school.
