Social Design Week is part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Design for Social Impact program and aims to reflect on the impact of design on society through conferences and a workshop with renowned professionals.
Design is currently considered as one of the main drivers of economic and social growth in developed and developing countries. The role of social design is to propose problem-solving strategies that drive innovation, promote success, and raise quality of life through new products, systems, services, and experiences.

Sigurdur Thorsteinsson uses a multidisciplinary approach in branding, experience design and business development. He is currently design director at Design Group Italia, an international multidisciplinary design studio that builds the future through research, designing tangible solutions to trigger meaningful change for people and businesses.

GIULIO VINACCIA
Design for Social Impact
Giulio Vinaccia, Italian design ambassador, recipient of the World Green Design Award and the Compasso d'Oro, is a product designer and has worked for 20 years for Italian brands such as Brembo, Ferrari Spa, Piaggio Spa, MomoDesign, Ducati, Aprilia, Gilera, Moschino and Borsalino. Currently, he is one of the most respected experts in social design oriented projects. He is a senior consultant for UNIDO and other UN agencies and national governments. Since 2014, he is the art director of the Creative Mediterranean project, founded by the EU and the Italian government to help the development of creative industries in Middle Eastern countries.

WORKSHOP
Sigurdur Thorsteinsson and Giulio Vinaccia, senior designers of the United Nations and great designers of international renown, and Fabio D'Angelantonio, marketing consultant and former marketing director of the Luxottica group and CEO of LoroPiana, guide this workshop with the aim of developing a multidisciplinary project, under the theme Social Design - Surf in Matosinhos, responding to a need of the Matosinhos City Hall, which is trying to extend the practice of surfing, with the implementation of new schools, new urban equipment and services to boost this practice. The workshop counts with the participation of 20 students from ESAD, coming from all the branches of specialization.
