Saturday, May 16th, at 17h, opens at Municipal Gallery of Matosinhos the exhibition of contemporary tapestry Escritas do Sol by Margarida Reis.

There will be nineteen works of the author on view, allocated for six thematic groups – Escritas do Sol, Escritas não Esclarecidas, Analogia dos Dias, O Sol e a Bela Adormecida, Lembranças e A Linguagem Amorosa do Têxtil.

Margarida Reis has made her magisterium at Escola Aurélia de Sousa, in Porto, and afterwards at Escola de Ensino Artístico Soares dos Reis, in the same city. Between hands and fibers, she has opened ways to a new pedagogical concept of technological learning. She has used the tactile knowledge of the material to talk about poetry and took use of the colors to express feelings and to create imaginary backgrounds, shaping them in the mythical and sociocultural history of the textile arts. Around a table or a loom sensitive narratives of metamorphosis and revelation have been lightly touched, potentiating dreams and wishes of contemporary interest. It is 36 years of teaching… the afterwards will befall.

There are works that, beyond a powerful effect of presence, are worth just for the ability to wake up inside us memories of hidden or almost forgotten sensations, either images, sounds or words, lost somewhere between the halls of the memory, and that suddenly start to shine – either as a conviction or a mystery. […] It was in a spring morning, more than 50 years ago, that I saw this show that from time to time comes back with this strong presence: one cactus shining under the sun, involved by transparent and gold thread, with small little drops like honey, shining too, bound to it. […] These tapestries from Margarida Reis have the power of perpetuating the moment and make it last, multiplying along the time the pleasure of discovering. The art works are like this: they connect us to the world through sensorial ways and the sensibility and teach us how to live better in the presence or in the memory. José-Luís Porfírio
