The exhibition Ulm: Método e Design 1953/68 features the Portuguese public, for the first time, the legacy of the project and the methodology associated with the paradigmatic German school of design, Hochschule Für Gestaltung Ulm, founded by Inge Aicher-Scholl, Otl Aicher and Max Bill in the postwar years and whose influence endures until today.
The projects on display - from chairs, tables, containers, electrical appliances, corporate identity - signed by major designers of the 20th century as Otl Aicher, Max Bill, Bill Bonsiepe, Hans Gugelot, Tomás Maldonado, and Dieter Rams, follow values of modularity and functional diversity so acclaimed in the 50s.
These projects come on-grouped according to various sections: simple systems, electronic systems, building systems, communications systems, or from the very academic structure of the school. The legacy of the Ulm school corresponded to the very statement of the design project: integrated into daily activities, simplifying tasks, accessible to the consumer, universal in its language and harmonizing technical, aesthetic and social values. These are the proposals that will be discussed in parallel with the exhibition through an expanded programme.
This exhibition is organized by ESAD, by Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos and by the Oporto’s Goethe-Institut, having been held by HfG-Archiv/Ulmer Museum for the 50th anniversary of the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm. The itinerancy is promoted by IFA - Institute of Foreign Cultural Relations. The parallel programme to the exhibition can be found on the website of ESAD.
