This was the final project for the Undergraduate in Design — Communication and emerges as a profound, critical and ironic exploration of a theme that is often avoided: boredom. Starting from the provocative quote ‘Boredom is the most sublime of all human emotions...’, the project A Quarter Past Nothing investigates boredom as an essential human condition, simultaneously paralysing and driving. Initially motivated by the context of social confinement, the authors were confronted with the vastness and ambiguity of the theme, eventually feeling themselves to be victims of their own object of study. It was at that moment, paradoxically, that the project gained meaning: recognising boredom as a driving force of creation, as an expression of the limits of the human mind and, at the same time, as its overcoming.

The result is a digital platform that has no beginning and no end: a website where the user wanders through columns of images, sound and video, deliberately created to be boring. This continuous, aimless experience aims to challenge the logic of productivity and efficiency, proposing a goal-less enjoyment, a kind of contemplation of nothingness. The research was supported by authors such as Peter Toohey and Lars Svendsen, and crossed areas such as philosophy, psychology and history. In the end, the project takes on boredom not as an absence, but as form and content. A Quarter Past Nothing is a mirror of our deepest concerns and our permanent desire to go beyond limits.
