The present document reflects upon the relationship between typography and territory. Throughout the study of the association between some typographies and regions, the emotional reading that typographic drawing can cause and the analysis of specific practical cases, we intend to show that typography has an identifiable and characteristic capacity.
To explore these points, a city was elected – Porto – over which we proposed ourselves to develop an identifiable typeface . Thus, during its planning and design, we reflected on some aspects, as, for example, the font’s ability to truly convey the whole character of a region or a local dimension, the creator’s influence, the way it integrates the dynamics of the city and the emotion that the typeface can trigger in the reader.
The practical component, which corresponds to the typographic design, is linked to theoretical contextualization about Porto. The historic, sociocultural and characteristic visual elements of the city’s research supported the chosen typographic approach. The result of this project – PortoType – is a typographic font, designed to identify and communicate Porto’s character. PortoType is a display typeface deriving from the architecture, geometry, graphic and typographic elements from the streets of Porto.
