In 2013, esad—idea — research in design and art was created. Since 2020, ESAD this Research Unit of ESAD has been part of the Sistema Científico e Tecnológico Nacional [National Scientific and Technological System] and is ranked “Very Good” by the FCT — Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia [Foundation for Science and Technology]. esad—idea is responsible for the management, programming and design of ESAD's main extensions, namely Casa do Design, ESAD Design Cluster and Exploratório. Our Research Unit promotes major international events such as the Porto Design Biennale. In addition, esad—idea has established itself as a publishing label and promotes Portuguese Design internationally, representing Portugal in BEDA — The Bureau of European Design Associations.

esad—idea, ESAD's Research Unit, is housed in a historic building in the center of the city of Matosinhos. We are responsible for managing, programming and designing for ESAD's main extensions: the Exploratório, the esad — design cluster and the Casa do Design.
