From design to 3D printing: measuring, modelling and printing an object
A hands-on course that covers the entire journey of an object, from a sketch on paper to the printed piece. Trainees learn how to measure accurately, read and produce simple technical drawings, model in Fusion and prepare files for printing in Bambu Studio, whilst understanding the function of each parameter. Each participant designs and prints an object of their choice, testing and refining it until the final version is achieved.

Programme
- Introduction: checking the facilities; 3D printing technologies (FDM, resin, SLS) and materials; first print of an existing model
- Measuring: use of a calliper, tolerances, dimensioned sketches based on real objects
- Reading and drawing: technical drawing (views, sections, dimensions); selection and sketching of each student’s object, within the limits of size and printing time
- Fusion I: interface, parametric sketches, constraints, extrusion and revolution
- Fusion II: fillets, chamfers, shell, holes, patterns and parameters
- Fusion III: object modelling, multi-part components and clearance for fittings
- Designing for printing: orientation, overhangs, supports, wall thicknesses; introduction to the slicer; printing the first prototype
- Slicer: principles common to any slicer, applied in Bambu Studio; analysis of the prototype and reprinting
- Testing and correction: measurement, model correction, common faults and basic maintenance; printing the final version
- Presentation and review: presentation of the objects, discussion of results, resources and communities to continue creating 3D prints
Competences
- Measure an object with a calliper and record the measurements on a dimensioned sketch
- Read a simple technical drawing
- Model parametric parts in Fusion
- Adapt a model to the constraints of FDM printing
- Configure and start a print job, understanding the key parameters
- Diagnose and rectify common faults
- Evaluate printers and materials according to their intended use and budget
Target Audience
People aged 16 and over who want to get started with 3D printing, or who already own a printer but only print models created by others. It is also aimed at:
- product and interior design students
- primary and secondary school teachers
- craftspeople, jewellers and prop makers
- anyone who needs to produce replacement parts or items for DIY projects
Requirements
- Minimum age of 16
- Basic computer skills
- Own laptop (Windows or macOS), with Autodesk Fusion and Bambu Studio installed, following the guide sent before the course begins
Trainer
Hugo Peixoto has a degree in Digital Arts and Multimedia and a postgraduate qualification in Motion Graphics from the College of Arts and Design (ESAD). He has been working as a Motion Graphics specialist since 2015 at the innovation centre of Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP), where he took part in projects such as Festival da Canção, Praça da Alegria, MEO Marés Vivas and Primavera Sound, as well as producing daily and institutional content. Before that, he collaborated with the production company ‘Um Segundo Filmes’.
