Not Just Hot Air
100 Years of Blow-Dryer Design
Catalog
Not Just Hot Air draws inspiration from Jeremy Aston's remarkable collection of blow-dryers, featuring over 170 products from Europe, Asia, and North America, showcasing a century of industrial design.
This collection highlights both functional innovations and design masterpieces. Each blow-dryer narrates a story, capturing the technological and social shifts, as well as evolving fashion and consumer trends. The development of this seemingly simple appliance not only reminds us about the past but also encourages us to imagine sustainable alternatives for the future.

O Desenho Como Errância Fronteiriça
Tributo ao Filósofo Espanhol Eugenio Trìas
Drawing understood as ‘border wandering’ was the subject of António Mendanha’s research as part of his doctoral thesis presented in 2007 to the University of Vigo, at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Pontevedra.
For more than a decade, the author studied Eugenio Trìas' philosophy of the limit, in order to guarantee credibility and ontological support for the idea that whenever a line travels on paper, it establishes defined physical boundaries, while opening itself up in a questioning way to the infinity of senses and meanings. There, the line is conjunctive and disjunctive at the same time: it unites and separates because, in its flesh, it presents itself as a tripolar boundary between matter and transcendence. And, the author asks, isn’t that what we are?

Para Ser Eterno Basta Ser Um Livro
Editorial e Design do Livro em Portugal no Século XX
Para Ser Eterno Basta Ser Um Livro (to be a book is to be eternal) invites us to travel across the 20th century with books and covers, in a broad overview of Portuguese book publishing, illustration and editorial design.
Fragile and delicate, the books in this catalog were for the most part made before our time, and will last longer than we will. The curators’ passion for books has led them to look at these objects up-close and intimately. One way of seeing prevails: the books as design artefact.

Sneakers
Portuguese Brands from the Estado Novo to the Turn of the Millennium
Casa do Design’s exhibition catalog
At a time when sneakers attain a global dimension as one of the icons of contemporary culture, Sneakers: Portuguese Brands from the Estado Novo to the Turn of the Millennium seeks to raise awareness of the legacy of the Portuguese sports footwear industry. This book is the catalog of the exhibition Sneakers: Portuguese Brands from the Estado Novo to the Turn of the Millennium curated by Pedro Carvalho de Almeida, on show at Casa do Design between February 11 and September 10, 2023.

Portugal Pop
Fashion in Portuguese 1970 – 2020
Casa do Design’s exhibition catalog
PORTUGAL POP addresses Portuguese fashion from the eve of the carnation revolution to the present day. By doing so, it seeks to understand the multiple ways in which our popular culture, history and collective memory were projected to contemporaneity through fashion, according to the creativity of designers of different generations, backgrounds, and languages. Rather than creating a linear and chronological discourse, what stands out from the last 50 years of our recent history is the inter-generational meetings and the reflection around such categories as “old” and “new”, “popular” and “erudite”, “rural” and “urban”.
This book is the catalog of the exhibition PORTUGAL POP, curated by Bárbara Coutinho, which was on show at Casa do Design between March 19 and November 13, 2022.

Post-Normal Design challenges normalized ways of designing within the current global neoliberal economic situation by proposing the concept of "Post-Normal Design" as an exploratory attempt to confront the damage and to reframe both the discipline and the profession.
Post-Normal Design originated out of a series of colloquia, Peripheral Perspectives, in July 2021, one of the core activities of the Porto Design Biennale 2021.

The historical influence of the movable type typography technique in the discipline of Graphic and Communication Design is indisputable and even today, in the midst of the digital age, the ability to master hundreds of years old typographic techniques allows us to broaden horizons and create innovative solutions to contemporary problems.
Hands-on Type proposes a “return to the past” to recover and re-contextualize typographic printing without, however, abandoning the perspective of renewal of Design and its practices.

In this time wherein Design, Cinema and New Media intersect, Image in the Post-Millennium informs and discusses the critical tension of the image today. Five essays zoom in on dynamic factors as mediation, process and critical tension.
How does (re)mediation in the digital age bring the apparatus of the image closer to the apparatus of the gaze? What is the viewer’s place and the contours of the reception of the interactive filmic narrative? And how should we reflect on the personal agency of citizens who are socially and politically engaged, at a moment when we are confronted with the image’s platitude?
This publication originates from the Image in the Post-Millennium conference, hosted by the Porto Design Biennale 2019. The conference took place on November 7, 2019 at the Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett, in Porto.

Imprimere
Art and process in the Portuguese National Printing Office's 250 years
Taking the opportunity of the 250th anniversary of the Portuguese Mint and National Press in 2018, Imprimere is dedicated to the artistic and productive processes of the graphic arts, situating their evolution in the general history of the graphic arts in Portugal and in the history of the National Press in particular, observing the different techniques developed throughout the years.
The book thus presents a thoroughly illustrated set of equipment, instruments, materials and professional memories that highlight the history of the printing industry in our country, while also understanding its value in current practices and training, particularly in the areas of Design education.
Imprimere — Art and process in the Portuguese National Printing Office's 250 Years is the result of the exhibition of the same name, on show at Casa do Design between May 5, 2018 and January 5, 2019.
