Artificial Intelligence in Design

— A creative revolution or an imminent challenge?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gone from a distant concept to an integral part of our daily lives. In the field of design, its potential impact is profound and multifaceted. As of spring 2024, statistics indicate a significant integration of AI into all industries, with projections suggesting substantial contributions to the global economy by 2030. In the midst of this transformative scenario, the design community faces fundamental questions: How can we harness the power of AI to increase creativity and innovation? What implications does this have for our traditional design processes?

The talk and live demonstration explore the role of generative AI tools, including CHAT GPT and VIZCOM, in defining the future of design.

By taking advantage of these tools, designers can navigate complex creative tasks with unprecedented efficiency and insight. From analysing initial sketches to generating iterative solutions, AI offers a dynamic framework for collaboration and exploration. However, among the promises lie challenges and ethical considerations that require careful examination.

This talk investigates the potential of generative AI in the product design process, examining its promises, pitfalls and the transformative possibilities it presents for the design industry. This session will be led by Jeremy Aston, a professor, researcher and Industrial Design specialist with a Master's degree in Vehicle Design, and will take place in the Auditorium on 22 April, in celebration of World Earth Day, at 10:30am.
