At a crucial time like the present, when fashion brands, industry and designers are rethinking the way they make and design, the Upcycling @ Jeanswear Project exhibition in the ESAD atrium celebrates the importance of implementing a circular economy model.
The exhibition showcases pieces made by students from the Project II - Fashion course, who explored different upcycling techniques, transforming existing clothes that were no longer used into pieces with a new purpose and context, always in search of an answer to the question of how to design clothes and use what already exists instead of making them from scratch.
Circular design motivates creatives to design products in a different way that goes beyond choosing organic cotton or recycled polyester. The upcycling process makes it possible to circulate products and materials, adding value and avoiding the growing accumulation of clothes in rubbish dumps and incinerators, an act that has a huge impact on the environment, a culture of waste and pollution.
The jeanswear projects were developed within the universe of a brand chosen by each class, namely Diesel and Acne Studios. The process included analysing the brand, creating research and developing a collection of ten garments, one of which was upcycled. The collection should reflect the brand's identity and launch a strategic vision about its product, looking for sustainable solutions.
