João Ornelas is an award-winning industrial designer, specialising in automotive and motorbike design. He graduated in Design from ESAP (Porto) and in Transport Design from the Art Center College of Design (Switzerland). He began his professional career at Renault, where he designed the Renault Pangea concept-car (1997).

From the end of the 90s, João led merchandising and branding projects at Novodesign (Lisbon), designing scooters and motorbikes for brands such as Piaggio, Lambretta, Bajaj and MH Motorcycles. He was also Managing Director at Grandesign, where he designed over 200 products and vehicles for international brands such as Black & Decker, B'Twin, Cannon Hygiene, Daihatsu, Decathlon, Delta Cafés, Fagor, Fiat, Glory Global Solutions, Hyundai, MINI, Philips, Polisport, Schréder, Simoldes, Skoda, Swatch, VW and the JH12 - the first 100% Portuguese off-road racing car.

His design recognition includes several distinctions, such as the ABC Mobility Design Award, three Red Dot Awards, iF & Good Design Product Design Awards, DME Design Management Award and Merchandising Design Gold Award.

Currently, João is the ambassador of the Art Centre Design Faculty in Portugal, a design consultant for car, motorbike and mobility brands, and continues to design and build different products, such as custom body kits for luxury cars and sports cars, industrial robots and agricultural machinery and vehicles.

João Ornelas presents the conference Ideas to Reality through Sketch Thinking on March 29 at 10:45 AM in the auditorium. He also leads the workshop Sketching Real-Time, from 14:30 to 17:30, in room 2.04, on sketching tools and materials for the design of vehicles, through the demonstration of several techniques to design and visually represent cars. The conference and workshop take place within the framework of ESAD ID Talks 2023.
